How it unfolds
Behind the scent
What "oud" means
In Arabic, oud (العود) simply means wood. A plain word carrying two thousand years behind it, rooted in Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian culture since the first century.
What Sylheti oud actually is
When an Aquilaria tree gets hit by a particular fungus, it starts producing dark resin to defend itself. That resin builds up inside the wood over years, and what you're left with is agarwood. People call it liquid gold, and that isn't an exaggeration.
The wood is cut, chipped, dried, then set in the still with water and steam. Hours of it, sometimes days on end.
In our country the work centres on Barlekha in Moulvibazar, Sujanagar especially. Roughly 80 percent of the country's agar factories sit in that one upazila. It's been going on for four hundred years, and in Sujanagar most households are involved in it one way or another.
Now the part that matters. This is not a blend, not a khalta. Just wood, water and fire. What came off the still is what's in the bottle. No base oil, no alcohol, nothing added.
Oud has been used in Middle Eastern medicine and religious practice for centuries. Today it stands for luxury.
What it smells like
Warm, intense, thick with damp earth, and a faint animalic pull underneath. People who've spent years with fragrance compare it to freshly wet soil, to a barnyard, to hay drying in the sun. One drop changes the feel of a room.
Because it's raw essence, the scent opens in layers. Beginning, middle and end are three different things. You won't get that shift from a blended oil, where the scent stays the same start to finish. Synthetic oud is a different animal altogether, less animalic, sweeter, more nutty.
Why it costs so much
Perfumery calls oud black gold. It's rare. Only about one tree in ten in the wild ever develops resin naturally, and the right infection takes years to set in.
Then there's the labour. The thickest, darkest sections have to be carved out by hand. No machine does it. A single bottle of pure oud can take a kilogram of agarwood or more. Blended oils can be made cheaply. Pure essence cannot.
Sylhet has one thing going for it. Trees here aren't injected artificially, they produce resin on their own. It takes longer, but what comes out is honest.
Not just perfume
In the Middle East, oud burns as incense. A piece of agarwood on hot coal, thick fragrant smoke rising, and that's been part of Arab homes, religious occasions and celebrations for a very long time. Lighting the bakhoor burner when guests arrive is simply how hospitality works there.
Longevity and care
Oud works as its own fixative, so it's the last thing standing on skin. Several hours to a full day, and days on fabric.
Being pure essence, it improves with time. The longer it sits, the more the scent settles and softens. Keep the bottle away from sun and heat, somewhere cool and dark.
How to spot the real thing
Fakes are everywhere. Real agarwood oil doesn't just smell of wood, it carries a complexity that shifts as it dries. Fakes don't do that.
How to wear it
One drop on the wrist or behind the ear is enough. It's raw essence, highly concentrated, and two drops is overdoing it. Don't rub it in, let it settle on its own.
Application guide
A single drop is enough
Attar is very strong. One drop on the wrist lasts hours.
On the pulse points
Apply on wrist, side of neck, or behind the ears. Body warmth lets the scent bloom.
Don't rub
After applying, don't rub. Just dab gently.
Cool & dark storage
Kept away from sunlight, it stays good for years.
