Agarwood - Sylheti | AAA Triple Super

Agarwood - Sylheti | AAA Triple Super

Woody

Region: Sylhet

The Shahanshah of the oud world.

When the resin bubbles up from the Oud Chips on hot charcoal and burns off into grey smoke, the scent feels like a nostalgic warmth wrapped in nobility. There's no question left, this resin saturation and this smoke performance belong to Triple Super grade alone. Deep, warm, resinous, a smoky spell that settles in. The Arab luxury tradition carries this, and the modern world has taken to it just as strongly.

The story

Behind the scent

Sylheti Agar-Oud

Agarwood isn't just another fragrant wood. When an Aquilaria tree gets infected by a particular fungus, it starts producing dark resin to defend itself. That resin builds up inside the wood over years, and what you end up with is agarwood. Only about one tree in ten in the wild ever develops it naturally, and that scarcity is why it sits among the most expensive woods on earth.

In our country the work centres on Barlekha in Moulvibazar, Sujanagar in particular. It's been going on for around four hundred years. Roughly 80 percent of the country's agar factories sit in that one upazila. In February 2024, both the agarwood and the agar attar of Moulvibazar received Bangladesh's GI recognition.

Grade

This Arowa batch is Triple Super. On the resin saturation scale, which runs Super, Double Super, Triple Super, that's the top of it.

But the grade name matters less than the proof, and the proof is something you can see for yourself.

How to burn it

Light the charcoal and wait until it turns grey. That thin layer of ash acts as a natural heat filter, keeping the charcoal's excess heat from reaching the wood directly. Skip the wait and the wood simply burns, and you get nothing.

Then place the chip gently on top. Within seconds you'll see thick dark resin bubbling out of it. The smoke comes off greyish white. It won't sting your eyes, and there's none of the discomfort you get from ordinary burning wood.

If you want even gentler heat, set a small piece of foil or a mica sheet on the charcoal and put the chip on that. The scent will last much longer.

The scent

It opens with the soft warmth of wood and resin. A refined smoky note comes through next. What settles at the end is a light sweetness that fills the space around you, and the trace stays in the room long after the smoke is gone.

Every chip is natural, so the resin runs differently through each one. That means the scent shifts a little every time you burn it. That's the mark of the real thing. You won't get that variation from blended bakhoor.

Storing it

Keep it in an airtight container, away from sun and heat. Stored properly it holds for years, and the resin actually settles deeper with time.

How to burn

Burning guide

01

Wait for the charcoal to go grey

Heat the charcoal with a lighter and wait until it turns grey. That thin layer of ash is what works as a natural heat filter, keeping the charcoal's excess heat from reaching the wood directly. Skip this wait and the wood simply burns, and you get no scent.

02

Rest the chip on the charcoal

Now place the chip gently on the charcoal. Almost at once you will see thick dark resin bubbling out. The smoke is grey-white, it will not sting your eyes, and there is none of the discomfort of ordinary burning wood.

03

Foil or a mica sheet

To bring the heat down further, set a small piece of foil or a mica sheet on the charcoal and put the chip on top of that. The scent then lasts far longer.
